Statement by Anthony Silveri, Business
Manager Mason Tenders District Council
The following statement was released today by Anthony Silveri,
Business Manager of the Mason Tenders District Council and Vice President of the New York
State AFL-CIO, upon the announcement of the retirement of General President Arthur Coia
and the election of Terence O'Sullivan as the new General President:
On behalf of the 13,000 members of the Mason Tenders District
Council, I want to congratulate Terry O'Sullivan on his election as General President of
the Laborers' International Union of North America.
We in New York have known and worked with Terry for many years, in
his capacity as chief of staff, as well as vice president of the Mid-Atlantic Region,
which includes parts of upstate New York. Over the years we have established a good
relationship and worked together on a wide range of issues of concern to our membership. I
wish President Coia the best in his retirement and look forward to continuing to work with
President O'Sullivan, Secretary Treasurer Carl Booker and the entire leadership of LIUNA
as we build a better union and better lives for our members.
The election of Steve Hammond as vice president at-large holds a
special meaning to those of us at the Mason Tenders District Council. It was under Steve
Hammond's leadership that the historic consolidation of our locals in New York City took
place. Through his leadership, wisdom and guidance we have been able to build a strong,
honest union that represents all the men and women of the Mason Tenders District Council
of Greater New York and Long Island.
