Local 5 Election -McGough Commentary (last revised 08/14/07
)
For the record, Trustees/Supervisors Joseph Romano and Ed Sladowski have done a remarkable job in restoring union democracy in local 5 where crime boss Al Pillotto ruled for 40 years and which was only put into supervision in December, 1998 with the appointment of former FBI agent Clancy as its initial supervisor. On the whole, Laborers for JUSTICE strongly recommend that both Ed Sladowski and Joe Romano be trusted and that Joseph Romano be given the benefit of doubt but watched closely-he can be sneaky at times and doesn't always keep members fully informed.. Either one of them, however, is one thousand times better than any appointment of lawyers or ex-FBI agents who know nothing about unions and who do not relate well to the common, ordinary working man. Schippers was a disaster for local 2 and Bloch is nothing to brag about as the trustee of the Chicago Laborers District Council. Bloch has done a "fair-mediocre" job and charity dictates he be given the benefit of the doubt considering the circumstances of his difficult task. I just wish Bloch had not appointed his law partner as counsel for the Chicago Laborers' Pension Fund- a clear conflict of interest as far as I am concerned.
Bloch, I believe, will try and get all the legal business for the Council and affiliated unions. Bloch should not benefit financially from his appointment as trustee. The interests of each local are not identical to the interests of the district council. The district council should work for the benefit of the locals and not the other way around.
