DATELINE: NEW YORK

BODY:
Eleven people, including two members of the Genovese Mafia family, have been indicted on charges arising from a large-scale racketeering scheme, the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office said Tuesday. According to the indictments, filed July 26 and unsealed Tuesday, the defendants were engaged in a widespread pattern of illegal activities since 1986 including extortion, demanding and receiving illegal labor payments, loansharking and gambling. As part of the scheme, the defendants allegedly tried to control the Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York and its trust funds, as well as various locals of the Laborers' International Union of North America. Among those charged are James Messera, 53, a fugitive who is alleged to be a captain in the Genovese family, and Alfonso Tarricone, 58, alleged to be a soldier in the family.
