HEADLINE: Government will supervise union

BYLINE: press services

DATELINE: NEW YORK

BODY:
Federal prosecutors claimed a victory over organized crime Tuesday,
announcing that a construction trades union had settled a racketeering
lawsuit and submitted to supervision.

U.S. Dist. Judge Lawrence McKenna approved the settlement, which calls
for a court-appointed investigations officer and a monitor to watch over the
Mason Tenders District Council of Greater New York. They will supervise the
council's seven trust funds, which are worth $ 270 million.

The government's lawsuit, filed in September, alleged that more than $ 50
million in Mason Tenders' pension and health insurance funds had been stolen
or wasted since 1987 because of organized crime.
