HEADLINE: 5 Indicted in Pension Fraud Case

SERIES: Occasional

BYLINE: From news services

DATELINE: NEW YORK

BODY:
Five men, including two alleged associates of the Genovese crime family, were arrested in what prosecutors called one of the biggest pension fraud cases ever brought in the United States.

The Manhattan U.S. attorney's office said the men were indicted on racketeering charges for a series of crimes that caused the Mason Tenders District Council's pension fund to lose $ 19 million. The council is a labor organization governing 10 local unions affiliated with the Laborer's International Union of North America.

Among those named in the indictments were Ron Miceli, 40, and Charles Trentacosta, 32, alleged to be associates of the Genovese family and Frank Lupo, 45, president of the Mason Tenders District Council.

The indictments allege the men turned the council into a racketeering enterprise and used it to embezzle money from the union's $ 200 million pension fund.
