Eleven people, including two members of the Genovese Mafia family, have
been indicted on charges arising from a large-scale racketeering scheme,
the U.S. Attorney's office said. According to the indictments, filed
July 26 and unsealed Tuesday, the defendants' illegal activities
included extortion, demanding and receiving illegal labor payments, loan
sharking and gambling. As part of the scheme, the defendants allegedly
tried to control the
Mason
Tenders District Council of Greater New York and its trust funds
as well as various locals of the Laborers' International Union. Among
those charged are James Messera, alleged to be a captain in the Genovese
family, and Alfonso "Big Funzi" Tarricone, alleged to be a soldier in
the family.
