Eyewitness News was the first on the scene today, as
FBI investigators raided a building in downtown
Providence. Investigators are keeping mum on why
they were there at 226 South Main Street for
most of the day, but it almost certainly
involves the International Laborers Union.
The FBI, the State Police, and the Providence
Police showed up at 226 South Main Street this
morning. They declined comment as they entered
the building for a search that may have included
all four floors of the building.
226 South Main is the location of the state's
most prominent labor law firm, Coia and Lepore.
It's also the office location of the Laborer's
International Union of North America, and the
New England Laborers Labor Management
Cooperative Trust. One of the principals in the
law firm later issued a statement saying the
firm was not the subject of the raid.
The agent in charge of the Providence
office declined to offer much detail on
why they were there.
“We’re conducting an investigation. I'm not
at liberty to say anymore than that today - part
of a larger investigation that we're looking at
and beyond that there will be a statement and
information out to the media in the future."
In the future, but not today. Agents brought
boxes into the building, but there was no
information forthcoming on what they were
looking for.
A search warrant or search warrants were
executed at 226 South Main Street, and we're
also told a search warrant was executed at a
mortgage finance company in Cranston .
