UNITING LATIN
AMERICAN LABORERS

For the first time this past month of August, there was one Hispanic representative, Francisco Perez from the Laborers Union Local 2 that attended the LCLAA convention in Rosemont, Perez was with over 10,000 Hispanic delegates, business agents, and organizers from both the United States and Puerto Rico. LCLAA represents the Laborer’s Council for Latin American Advancement, which serves to unite and define Latin American Laborers and their communities on civil rights and educational issues

During the civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 1960’s, Hispanics fought a constant battle to better the social and economic opportunities for them. After many years, twenty-five trade unionists from different U.S. regions gathered at Albuquerque, New Mexico to discuss the needs of Hispanic workers, to improve the quality of life and the need to establish one unified voice that would bring the Laborers and Latino communities together for a better quality of life.

In 1973 was the first four-day conference with the Latino trade unionist from all over the United States and Puerto Rico that came together with AFL-CIO to organize and set the founding rules that would govern and begin Laborers Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) for leaders to come.
