GRIEVANCES

Starting in late June and on into July, Ed Sadlowski and myself began a series of arbitration hearings with National Power Rodding (N.P.R.). We’ve heard three of those grievances with two different arbitrators, and are still awaiting a decision. In between those three hearings, N.P.R. and our attorney Mr. Matthew Cleveland have come to mutual settlements on six of the outstanding cases. Dates are currently set for the end of August (29th and 30th) to hear the final three grievances concerning wages and fringes. After a thorough and successful audit of N.P.R. payroll records, it was discovered that there were monies and fringes owed to members. We anticipate those grievances will be handled timely and cost efficient.

We are now putting together a strategy to go after the non-union sewer cleaning outfits operating under our jurisdictional scope of work in an attempt to organize them into the union. I look forward to hearing from my fellow brothers and sisters for your support or impute on this matter. Results on these two matters will be published in upcoming quarterly issues, as well as orders of business at your Local 2 General Meeting.

Reggie Robinson
JOINT GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE
CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT

As many of you already know, the contract for the Park District has been up for some time now. The coalition has been in negotiations for several months now. The coalition had presented its proposal to the Park District. There is no progress to report at this time.

I also at this time would like to inform you that each region has a steward, They are David Golab from the North Region, Bob Stevens from the Central Region, Mike Calvert from the Lake Front Region, Rene Diaz from the South East Region and James Majerczyk from the South West Region.

There were several grievances filed lately, and I am proud to say that each one was in favor of the employee. Two members will receive pay for time that was denied to them. Three members were given a written reprimand, and each one was dismissed. Two members were also up on charges that could have terminated them. They both are still working for the Park District.

A union is only as strong as its members. We must stand up for one another if we are to exist as a Union. I once read “united we bargain divided we beg”. This must apply for your future employment at the Park District. Attending union meetings is a start in the right direction. There you can voice your concerns or complaints if any. This is your union, know what it is all about. Meetings are held every 2nd Tuesday of the month at 300 S. Ashland, Chicago. If you need further information call the office at (773)586-5766.
