Councilman Copeland under investigation

Video VIDEO: Union spending under scrutiny

- The Department of Labor investigates spending of Local 500.

Phil Copeland is the head of Laborers Local 500. The U.S. Department of Labor is investigating the possibility that Copeland allowed members to misuse Union funds. 13 ABC's Elisa Amigo interviewed Mr. Copeland on Sunday afternoon at the union hall in north Toledo where he is secretary-treasurer and a union member since 1966. Copeland says the allegations are untrue.

The Department of Labor is looking into whether Copeland allowed members to spend union funds for personal entertainment. According to The Toledo Blade, a Union official admitted using Union funds for strip clubs and rafting trips. An attorney for the Union says there are other labor organizations that are also being audited. The attorney told 13 ABC, if there is anything that needs to be corrected, Local 500 will take care of it.

Mr. Copeland had the following reaction, "When they say I misused some money or some funds, that's absolutely not true. I never have, never will."

Copeland currently sits on Toledo City Council and he is also running for Lucas County Commissioner. He is hoping to put this incident behind him so it does not affect his campaign.
