Laborers to remain in AFL-CIO and Building Trades
At a press conference with Laborers General President Terence O'Sullivan, Illinois Police & Sheriff's News Editor, Jim McGough, asked O'Sullivan who would be hired as organizers to accomplish his goal of organizing on a national basis the employees of national and international construction companies that are now the major employers of LIUNA members. O'Sullivan felt confident that LIUNA's seven regional organizing divisions and approximately 200 organizers would be equal to the task. Terence O'Sullivan reiterated LIUNA's commitment to remain in the AFL-CIO and in the building trades councils yet indicated LIUNA would contribute to the operating budget of the Change to Win Coalition that will be drawn up in the next couple of weeks.
Steve Greenhouse of the New York Times and Jim's reporter friends from BNA, Chicago Tribune, Bloomberg News and Associated press heard O'Sullivan commit to only running for re-election in 2006 as LIUNA General President. despite numerous rumors that he is the candidate proposed by the Change to Win Coalition to succeed Sweeney 6 months after Sweeney's election, opening the door for LIUNA General Secretary Treasurer Armand Sabitoni or LIUNA Vice President Dennis Martire to replace him as LIUNA General President via the appointment process.
LIUNA delegates to the convention included Sam Fresina, Charles LeConche, Bruce Monaco. LIUNA vice presidents: Terrence Healy, Ed Smith, Raymond Pocino, LIUNA Secretary-Treasurer Armand Sabitoni, all of whom were welcomed by Jim to his fair city Where Corruption is King.
